GSD Club of Bulawayo Over 50 dogs were entered in the breed show on 29 August with Colin Frankel from SA judging. This is the first grading show we have had since the last one over 2 years ago. Results see show

ZKC & KCH had their all breed shows on 14 & 15 August. German Shepherd results see ZKC show and KCH show.

GSD Council: Still has not been solved as the GSD Harare would not accept the changes in the constitution, which was ordered by Zimbabwe Kennel Club.

Condolences

Evita passed away suddenly and so far no real diagnosis was given. Again various possibilities. She was treated for billiary, was the injection perhaps the reason? Who knows, unless a thorough investigation is done?

So sad that this beautiful dog won at least three or more RCC’s in the breed, if her mother had not been entered all the time [who has so many CC’s], Evita could have had several CC’s. Evita’s owner has done so much for this animal, socializing and training, a better owner you could not whish for and she could have had the pleasure winning those CC’s for all the work she put into this animal.

Border collie Khama also passed away suddenly. At the university it was confirmed Billiary as her blood count was very low, but I have heard that it could have been a combination with a stroke? An autopsy was going to be done.

What ever it was there is a loved one gone out of your life. Our condolences to Clive and Shirley.

I would like to point out that Billiary ticks are active even in winter.

  1. So many say that in winter there are no ticks. I lost two dogs in 1966 during winter [didn’t know much in those days].

  2. Others say: I have no ticks in my garden, but forget that they can be transported into your garden by your car tires, 4 of them and more than once a day [more than 30 times a month].

Do make sure your dogs are dipped [every 2 weeks] and do not think that “frontline” or “spot on” [once a month] keeps them free for more than a month.

Congratulations 1

Rotek Club in S Africa on 20 June had Herr G Muller judging and our Zimbabwe bitch Dixie managed to come into V4th place.

It was pointed out to me that Ziska van der Weidenstrasse who was registered in Zimbabwe for some time came V3 at the same Rotek Club show.

Congratulations 2

I was down in Bulawayo for a couple of shows. On Saturday morning the Rottweiler Association had an IPO show and the three contestants did well with Gunstan [Rottweiler] qualifying in IPO 3, the top stake in this discipline, they were judged by South African Judge Mr. Colin Frankel (SV).

The German Shepherd Dog Club of Bulawayo had their Grading Breed show on Saturday afternoon. There were 54 dogs entered and the show was extremely well run. Judged by Mr. Colin Frankel (SV), who is the only SV Judge in Southern Africa. All dogs got their grading, needed for further breeding, varying from P and VP for the puppies and SG to V for the older dogs.

The V1 open Dog Conan and open Bitch Hexe winners were a brother and sister combination bred by Paul Greeff and they were still giving the young dogs a run for their money at the age of 7 years. Mr. Colin Frankel only found out afterwards that these two dogs were his dog Ober von Noricum's progeny!

On Sunday at the crack of dawn we were out at Induna Airport to watch and judge the working trials. There were three contestants and they also did very well, two dogs qualifying one in CD and one in TD 3.

Pam Brennan qualified CD with her dog Rigel and Qualified TD 3 with Tango. She told me that this was her first dog ever to get that high after how many years? Also it was the first dog to qualify TD 3 since 22 years in Bulawayo, and I can only guess that 22 years ago it must have been Avril la Grange with Tokalosh who got TD 3 all those years ago.

Congratulations Pam and I bet you are still on cloud 7 !

Working Trials Association double Champion working trails show.

’Pippa

The group with Bow Wow sponsor

Working Trials Association held their last double working trials on 7 & 8 August. This show was sponsored by BOW WOW, who is sponsoring many of our Zimbabwe Shows and is tremendous in giving their products as prices for these shows. The competition on Saturday only gave one qualifier: Paul Rust with Tamar got the so coveted CD Excellent. Well-done Paul. The next day we saw some better working dogs and had two qualifiers in CD, 1st was Heather Armstrong with Ely and 2nd Paul with Tamar. Gladys achieved qualifying marks in all sections, but failed the gun test with her Pippa. Pippa did a most wonderful track with 97% on Sunday. Not many get such a great result, well done Gladys and Pippa.

Comment made was: Who is a stud dog? The person who wrote this to me felt that a dog could only be called a stud, when he actually has produced puppies. I like to differ and call them all stud dogs, there are some young dogs coming up and they might be the right dog to be used on your bitch. So lets call them all stud dogs, wait till they get a chance. Who knows they might produce not only the shape, but most important a good character!

Helen Maxwel with her new sable pup. Well known in the obedience and IPO training when she was in Zimbabwe and now living in the UK, where she got this lovely sable pup, who is related to my Bakhari as they both have Tom van het Leefdaalhof in their pedigree. Very good working lines and who knows Helen might start on her IPO Training again? Come Helen show us that you can get her that far?

A Sable develops his final colour up till the age of three

When will you be able to see if a dog is a sable, this is determined directly after birth, at that moment, it is defined if a dog is a black, a black & tan or a sable.

Colours in sable can be: grey [wolf]; grey-black; black-grey; grey-brown; grey-yellow; grey darkly clouded over; grey clouded, mask; dark grey; mask; grey, brown-black clouded; grey, brown marks on the head and legs; mask dark grey, dark line on the middle of the back [aalstrich]; middle grey; bright grey; pale grey

Correction from August ZimDog News: Timo was VA 6 in 19998, VA 4 in 1999, but then became the Vice Sieger in 2000

VA2 *Timo vom Berrekasten SZ 1969122

VA1 at the Austrian SiegerShow 2000 -VA2 at the BSZS 2000 -Overall champion ( of all breeds) at the VDH-Bundessieger-Zuchtschau in Dortmund 2000. To date in the 2001 season Timo has gone V1 under Messler (twice), Norda, Nitschke and Kosfeld.

A day in the life of a young dog

This morning, I woke up & kissed my dad's head. I peed on the carpet, then went back to bed.

"The life of a puppy, oh my, this is great." Then I thought about breakfast, " I hope it's not late."

Mom took me outside, we walked for a while. This never fails, to make Mama smile.

I sniffed of everything, that we did pass, I ate something weird -- it gave me gas.

I'm sure God loves me, I know that is true. He gave me so many great things to chew.

Rugs, plants or rocks, I really don't care. What I truly like best, is Dad's underwear.

That obedience book, was sort of yummy. Though it didn't sit well on my poor puppy tummy.

I threw up a bit, but that was all right, When Mom found it later, I was well out of sight.

I made streamers of T.P., while running at full speed. Mom's pretty quick -- but I was still in the lead.

I flew under the bed, and Mom flew past, She stopped -- shook her head, and breathed, "You're too fast."

Mama later phoned Daddy, and said, "It was frightening!" That afternoon, she was sure I'd pooped lighting.

She'd sat at the computer, while I chewed the cord, She thought I was mad, but I was just bored.

When Mama had enough, couldn't take anymore, That's when my tushy got shoved out the door.

I love it inside, but outside is best. Lay in the cool grass, and had a good rest.

That didn't last long, there was too much to do- Can't quite remember where I hid Daddy's shoe.

I found an old bone, and scratched at a flea, I watched the dumb squirrels as they jumped in a tree.

I barked at the kids, when they got off the bus. I can't figure out why this makes Mama fuss.

I barked at the neighbour, I barked at the wind. I barked and barked, till Mom yelled, "COME IN."

The sun dipped in the west-soon Daddy would come! I sure love my daddy: we always have fun.

I barked at my daddy, then turned on my charms, I woo-wooed, "Hello," then jumped in his arms.

Sitting under the table -- it's sooo hard to wait. Daddy slipped me a goodie right off his plate.

I raced through the house, and scattered my toys, Ricocheted off the furniture, and made lots of noise.

Mom found her purse -- the one I abused. Daddy let loose a chuckle. Mom asked "Amused??"

I cowered down low, I must be in trouble. Dad said, "Wasn't MY boy, it must be his double!"

Mom turned off the TV, and said, "Time for bed." Dad said "Let's go boy," and patted my head.

I got in my spot, between Mom and Dad, I thought 'bout my day and what fun I had.

Mama kicked out my bone from the covers below, Then let loose a sigh -- a sigh deep and low.

She gave me a kiss, and snuggled me tight, and whispered so softly, "My darling, goodnight."
