Dates & News:

ZimDog News, can be accessed from: www.vanerp.net.

12 December will see the yearly Christmas lunch at the Kennel Club. Suggest contacting the Committee to find out

19 December will be the Dog Christmas party with lots of fun races, musical chairs etc with a tea and snacks in between.

26 December the Kennel Club will be closed and I believe that is the only day in the year that they do so, otherwise always open for those members and friends who like to have a chat and some training on a Sunday.

GSD Council: Nothing to report on this issue and I wonder if it has become a Stalemate? Why is it that nothing seems to be done, nor that we get notified as a member, what will become of this body?

Another Joanna Fleming – Plumb seminar was organised in Johannesburg and again I participated, a fantastic way of learning how to get your dog to work with food drive and no compulsion like the old days. This is new for a lot of people and some still train the old way, where often the lead and chain are used to correct the dog.

These were the tracking fields we were able to use, plenty of room for all 15 or so entries that were on the course of Joanna Fleming Plumb. The advanced dogs would have their Tracks laid while the puppies would be done first and Joanna would follow us to give advice and suggestions how to go on. Tracks were never laid in a straight line, but always in a serpentine way, to the left and again to the right, so the dog would get used to different directions in a gentle way and also would be able to cope with different wind directions.

It was imperative that the dog was hungry and to be able to learn, the dog could go from one meal, only eaten on the track, without food till the next day. This sounds rather harsh, but we were there to learn and at home you can adapt the meals. Top right picture was the way to bring your dog to the start of the track, focussed on food at all times. Left picture, taking some food out of your pocket to be put down at the start of the track. Right: Following each track at all times. Each track and dog then was discussed for us all to learn from. Advice was given how to overcome certain problems for each dog and handler. Joanna standing at right, in picture.

One dog that already had a SchH 3 qualification was still not tracking well enough and had to go to basics again to improve on future performances. Another dog with the same qualification would get up from the article as soon as the handler came near the dog, this wills all lose marks in the competition and to be sorted out and training had to change for the dog to stop this behaviour. It was extremely interesting to participate and see how we all did and improve on our training.

Stud dogs in Zimbabwe.

7 Von Brinson Dieter, ZKC 18333, DOB 9-9-2000 [Sire Carly von der Kahler Heide, Kkl 1 00/01, V, SchH 1 [SA23271/97] / Dam Ch von Brinson Belle, V, AD, Ao [14467]]. Was used once and produced 3 dog pups & 5 bitch pups

8 Beinhard Edo, ZKC 19114, DOB 10-7-2001[Neptune vom Bad Boll VA SchH 3 / Yassa von der Norriswand ‘V’, SchH 1] Was used 6 times on 6 different bitches and produced 10 dog pups & 7 bitch pups, this is not correct as I do not have the correct information. There were more pups, but have not the info.

He seems to produce some fantastic offspring with practically all with exceptional characters. Their conformation seems to be very good too, but this is the case when you see them in the ring and not all do come into the show ring. Edo certainly has proved to be a dog to use for getting very good puppies.

Dog eats phone
By Tim Richardson
Published Tuesday 9th November 2004 10:56 GMT

A dog in Turkey has wolfed down a mobile phone. The owner of the phone only discovered it was inside the mutt when he rang the number and heard the dog's stomach ringing. The man, a petrol station attendant, initially thought the phone had been stolen by a motorist filling up with fuel, according to the Andolou news agency by way of Ananova.

But when he dialled the number he got the shock of his life when he heard his Nokia phone trilling from inside the pooch's tum. The phone owner has now been, ahem, "reunited" with his handset.

Comments from our Readers

My animals ALL have excellent, hard temperaments, that are super for both family and show life as so often proven. The odd oddball here and there as in humans will always pop up now and again as do construction and conformation faults too.

Well, popped back on the web and saw your September ZimDog newsletter. Nice to see Zilletal Volker's add. Infect, he had one registered litter with ZKC. Surprised you were not aware of that. Anyway, now with excellent hips, character and "SG" grading he will be used some more. Only trouble is his owners now live in Perth making documentation work difficult etc. Anyway, you said I should correct your facts if incorrect.

Besides those two minor things, well done for such a lovely newsletter and look forward to the next. If you are going according to age, I assume Zillital Conan will be along soon too. He has a few good years left in him still that need advertising. ps. Thought Kimon had more progeny than you suggested ?

Editor: The above were some comments from Paul and he now has imported more than any of us here in Zimbabwe, and was complimented by Colin Frankel on that fact. Both his dog and bitch from the same litter did win the Open Bitch and Dog class Grading Show in Bulawayo end of August, which shows that Colin did like his breeding.
