News: "On a sad note, Wirka died on Monday [11 September] afternoon at the vets. She had a heart attack and died. "She looked so beautiful at the show and was bouncing around. The only good thing is that she couldn't have suffered much. Our condolences to Manfred and Geraldine. Leigh Tarr has lost her beautiful Dream and the same to her, so sad losing a dear friend and our best wishes. Did you know Neville Crouch has been very ill and now home but spends most of his time in a wheelchair. He had kidney problems as well as his acidity, which was up causing him to have so much pain resulting in gout. We wish him speedy recovery. Checking up on Chipping
Obedience Show at KCH The grounds looked lovely and the grass coverage was good and green. Three dogs were in class C, none qualified. I only watched Beginners class and Class Novice. Beginners saw June Robertson competing from long way back. Wonderful that some of us come back to the life of training dogs. A new person Colleen Thackray entered and then Dave Lamb with his lovely cross Shepherd who has entered before. Picture one shows you how confident they leave their dogs in the ‘Sit-stay’ and the other shows you how one dog decided it was better to be near Mum. Dave Grimbley judging which was a pleasure to have him coming from Bulawayo.
Kirsten Tsuma from Bulawayo, Roy helping and looking pensive at the sitting dogs, judged novice. Competitors consisted of Gill Houghton, Gladys Little, Helen Brown and Maryanne Pitman. Helen had problems with her new 18-month Border collie and withdrew before the stays. Gladys handling a Poodle, so different from her B collies and Shepherds. Well done as this is a difficult breed to train. Gill has been long in competing and does well. Maryanne surprised me as a very good little handler and a pleasure to watch how she went round the ring with her own bred Lab.
Some lovely Midlands Club Breed Shows were held again on 23 & 24 September 2006. It was a very pleasant two-day show. Flowers all over the place, even in the toilets. The verandah looked clean and the tea garden was so pretty, in a little grassed area were tables with their umbrella’s and flowers in the various flower boxes. The catering was excellent with bacon & egg rolls, hamburgers and even steak rolls. Plenty beautiful cakes provided by the various members, all to make much needed money for the club. The bar is like a pub, where dogs and owners can come in to have something to drink and a chat with friends. In winter they even have an open fire going and a braai outside the windows of the bar. Where will you find a more pleasant and excellent club to have our shows, compared to most places outside this country? Two all breeds’ shows and the Working club held their shows. They were held here in Harare, and as they are the Midlands shows, they provide members with their ‘outside CC tickets’ to make up dogs into a champion.
