Condolences: Jan Cashel wrote to me: I very sadly put Jade to sleep yesterday [3 August] after 15 years and 7 months. She was my absolute soul mate and I felt I could not watch her get up 4 to 5 times a night and then be unable to settle just panting and wondering up and down the passage. She was a one in a million girl and she went out of this world like she came in asking for nothing. I miss her terribly and there is a yawning gap where she was. Jan and Jade competed many times in our shows, but they now have moved to CT and Jade had some lovely times still at the beach for her walks. The funeral service was held 2 days after Marlene Kappel passed away and some 35 people attended the special service in Bulawayo.
News: Patricia Collier is on the move again and will let you know what they have decided and where they will settle down again. - Our new address is: Chute Collis Lodge, Upper Chute, Nr. Andover. Hampshire. Sp11 9EF. Phone : 01264 730417. The Chutes are in the Highlands of Southern England and we are having to get used to the rarefied air at 850 feet. It is magnificent country with hills,.forests and meadows. The main livestock seems to be horses and there are thousands around here. We are actually in Wiltshire but on the Hampshire border. Nearest town is Andover, about eight miles away. There are about five Chutes (Little, Middle, Upper, Lower etc.). The roads are narrow, winding, treacherous and utterly confusing. It is said that no one can find their way to the destinations until the third attempt and certainly no one has found us at the first attempt. Even our SatNav has had a nervous breakdown. Best way to find us is to call at the nearest pub and phone for assistance. It is a very rural area and we cannot see any neighbours, which is highly unusual for this country. Gladys wrote to me: GSD Show [22 July] was very enjoyable. Unfortunately with 3 dogs competing I forgot to take a note of the results but have asked Sam for them. Leroy tied with Kia [Mary Anne] but lost in the run off. I was quite pleased otherwise I would have been out of Novice. Pippa sitting on 2 but she messed up her Send away when she spotted Gill down at the bottom end exercising Magic and again in the Scent she actually left the ring when she saw Gill sitting. I was a bit upset, as I had hoped she was to do a good scent but know now to be wary of where Gill is. Kelly did not work well and did not even do scent which she never fails or very rarely. Audrey won Beginners losing only 3/4 points and Caroline came second also with a qualification. Rauri won Class B but will give you the results when I get them hoping she will bring them this Sunday to the Toy Dog Club Show.
Toy Obedience show held on 5 August The weather was warming up, trees still without leaves. The Kenya coffee tree was in full bloom, resulting in lots of ‘sticky’ flowers on the ground, which made them, stick to dog tails and dog paws. Most dogs were not too worried. I watched Class C with a brilliant performance of Gladys and Pippa, loosing only 91/2 points giving her another CC Certificate. Well done Gladys. Both others did not get the C Test Scent unfortunately. Faithful Roy was the Judge.
Novice was also fun to watch with the poodle Leroy, the little terrier ‘Frodo’, Helen Browns new Border collie, Maryanne’s Lab, Gill Houghton’s Golden Retriever and a nice working GSD from the GSD Club [so was Frodo]. Gladys won the class with qualifying marks and so is out of Novice, second was Maryanne and Helen 3rd. The dogs worked well and all enjoyed the test, which was judged by Geraldine Mc Laughlan
European Community ban on imports of Dog and Cat fur. The EU states and European parliament have come to an agreement on banning of dog and cats fur. The ban will come into effect on 31 December 2008. Many Europeans have send in letters to complain and 200 000 signatures were collected. The much talked fur trade comes mostly out of China, as a substitute and imitation of other expensive fur. These dog and cat furs also seem to be used in toys. E-mail News: Just a quick note to wish all competitors well for the show on Sunday, and may the best breed [there are no prizes for guessing which that breed is] win. Will be going on holiday with Meg and Robyn in August - traveling to Turkey for a week and then hopefully towards the end of the month will go to Edinburgh to see the Scottish Champ Dog Show [will go with Di Begbie -formally Di Cottam ex Cleeve Cottom wife.] Just before ending, does anyone have contact with Jessie Dunn, and if so could you let me have her contact address. Best wishes and good showing Barry Meg and Robyn Henderson
