EOGM of Kennel Club of Harare: PLEASE HELP An extra AGM was held on 28 October to discus the clubs financial troubles. Dick explained what was happening and why. Quite the sad circumstances that prevail in Zimbabwe. Some time ago one member was overheard saying. I don’t need the club. I myself haven’t been going to the club for some time [months ago], but have changed my view and do go there, if possible, every Sunday again. It is great to mix with ‘same thinking’ doggy friends once a week and so many of us ‘lonelies’ should be only too pleased to be able to go there and see lots of friends in one morning. So please all of us should make an effort to attend and think of the dire streets the club is in and find solutions to help it to stay in existence. Lots of suggestions were coming from the floor and here are some of them in a short version.
Roy Ellis: left or leaving members to help with a monthly donation of 2-pound Stirling. [No mention was made where this would have to be deposited. I can provide with a bank account in case willing deposits would be made] Trudy: make or increase co-operate membership, publicity, membership drive, ask Embassies. Dick reacted to that, that we should keep a low profile to various suggestions. Miss Miles: Raise membership based on the US dollar Ursula: base it on half a US dollar. Are we prepared to increase this? Kelvin: this were good ideas, perhaps everyone should pay an attendance fee, each Sunday you come and not only the ones who do training [I wonder if this will keep ‘visitors’ away?] Dick: brought up that the Kennel Club was created in 1895 as a pure breed club and only started obedience classes in 1937. [This could give a lot of members and supporters a lot of sentimental thoughts] Gill Houghton: We have had no new members for some time. Mrs Rutherford: all was so very negative, no breeding of new dogs, and no fun for all of us, till times would get better. Ray Folcarelli: Suggested that it would be so nice for most of the members to come and show your face, so Sundays could become an outing for them. Mike Rust: Many are Life Members and so no membership fee was coming in from that part. Perhaps they should be charged again? Better still make a monthly donation? Maryanne Pitman: the emphasis could be that we use our grounds for ‘markets’ and have more Dog Jumping and obedience shows. Again she stressed that we have the venue, but are not using it to our advantage and could advertise through Mango. Errol; budget for what is needed and how to operate in US dollars and then suggest to work out the fees needed to get from the members. Update membership every three months or so? Ray: it was a good idea to have shows [markets] on a Saturday, but we do not have the people to help us. Work on custom awareness to be able to get more people to help us. Dick: announced that Pippa was going to retire as the caterer of he club, she had been doing it over many years and invited a new person. We need our facilities for our members. Ursula: told the meeting that they had started a new Obedience course and only managed to get 5 new people. [Why was this was not advertised to all our members with E-mail?] Mrs Rutherford: the best idea seemed to be Maryanne’s suggestion to try and get a market like the flee markets around the town. Dick: a final say was that if the club does not get support, it would have to close its venue and will never be able to hold any shows in future. When a member came to the committee table to give a donation, only then Dick piped up: Any more donations??? Could have been a good idea to go around with a hat??? Edna Rust: offered to pay the water bill every month. Now this is a great substantial help to the club. -----------
"Zimbabwe's Traveling Man" Here is her news already: send on 4 November "Well, we're off! With the withdrawal of British Airways' Harare/London service, we now have to fly BA Comair's flight to Johannesburg and on to wherever - in my case, first stop London. Being a strict vegetarian, I had booked veg. meals all along the line, so had a very nice lunch on board enroute to Joeys. However, OR Tambo International Airport seems not to improve and their Transfer facilities are, to put it mildly, abysmal and overly time-consuming; if it hadn't been for the timely intervention of a security officer, I would probably be in the unending queue!! We made it though and I was amazed to see the new interior of BA's 400 series Jumbo in the Club section - beds at long last! Well done! Dinner was then served and, in my case, it turned out to be a repetion of lunch!!! Same caterer in Johannesburg I could see. When, however, breakfast turned out to be another near repetition of lunch and dinner, I thought it was time to shoot the ref!!! Less one suitcase full of clothes - presumably still sitting in either Harare or Joeys - we are now down in Maidstone in Kent with Michael - the Garden of England - and I've started shopping!!! Had Plaice and Chips for lunch, a particular favourite of mine. Hold thumbs that the missing suitcase comes to light soon, as I move up to Middelsex for a long weekend shortly and I'm outa clothes!!! Talk about climate change, the weather is glorious in Blighty!!! Be back soon everyone. Well, yesterday, Friday the 2nd, saw us in a car accident enroute from Kent to South Kenton in Middlesex with a German car stacked to the gunnels with electronic equipment for measuring cell phone strengths between London and Edinburgh - and all points in between I gather!!! Still, as I had no clothing in between what I stood up in, and my birthday suit, a new wardrobe became a necessity urgently!! Unbeknowns to David and I, British Airways were rushing a little van down to Kent with my, by now, not so missing suitcase!! So when I return to Kent next week, before flying to Cheshire, I should be back to a full complement of clothes!! Good on BA! Today is my rest day after all the flying and I am staggering through a plethora of weighty British newspapers. But all these stairs in their houses!!! Give me the single storey houses any day!!! Tomorrow, the 4th, we're off to John Lewis at Brent Cross for some serious VAT free shopping - coming up, one England Cricket shirt for a Basset Hound name of Andyflower!! Tuesday, the 6th, sees us heading off in the opposite direction to Chatham in Kent for electronic equipment and it's also Market Day in Maidstone which I must see. Friday the 9th sees Michael and I meeting up inTunbridge Wells with a long standing friend of half a lifetime who used to live in the former Rhodesia; a Tennis administrator who now lives so far down in the west country of England that I never get time to get down there, we liven up the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells for the day!!! Saturday the 10th sees me flying up to Manchester to my friends in Lymm and one fervently hopes that curried spuds, curried carrots, curried beans, curried apricots and curried bay leaves are not on the vegetarian menu!!! Signing off for now to take a colonial siesta!!!
2nd Saga - Round The World with The Traveling Man send on 14 Nov: Well, Friday the 9th of November turned out to be a bonanza day!!! Tunbridge Wells is a very ancient English City in the south east, going back many centuries and was a Spa of note in Regency times where people came to take the waters; one of the sites is at the end of The Pantiles, which is a Walk/Promenade/Stroll (call it what you will) where the gentry showed themselves off during the Season. Tonbridge Wells today aims to maintain its position as an ancient city and on Friday the 9th it was - the French Connection!!! Myriads of tricolours flew over a multitude of French stands selling all manner of French goods from cheeses (ø5 for as many as one could carry away sort of thing!!), to furs/fruits/sweets/pastries/breads/carvings/so many I can't remember them all. Then, after a lengthy lunch with my friend from Gloucestershire, we shopped till we dropped and I hauled half of it the next day up to Cheshire on BA. Up-to-date, this week has been a round of one North Country town after another, interspersed with yet more Christmas shopping in more Markets - vastly different from our Flea Markets !! No rain, however, and climate change persists – thank goodness!!! My main drama has been the lack of a Satellite on which to watch the Paris Masters, the BaaBaas match and the Shanghaii Masters!!! Anyone contemplating doing such a journey as the one on which I am embarked, should carry their own Satellite system with them - somehow!!! Anyday now I have to pack again ready for the flight to Canada this Friday the 16th, as my 16 days in Britain are nearly over and she's still a lovely little Isle to visit.
An elderly gentleman... had serious hearing problems for a number of years. He went to the doctor and the doctor was able to have him fitted for a set of hearing aids that allowed the gentleman to hear 100% The elderly gentleman went back in a month to the doctor and the doctor said, "Your hearing is perfect. Your family must be really pleased that you can hear again." The gentleman replied, "Oh, I haven't told my family yet. I just sit around and listen to the conversations. I've changed my will three times!" Who reminds me of this [editor] ???
